RMGO PAC endorses Justin Smith for Sheriff

Today (09/10/2010) Colorado’s only gun rights political action committee, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners PAC, has endorsed Republican Justin Smith for Larimer County Sheriff.

“Though we endorsed a different candidate in the primary election, Justin Smith has re-evaluated his position on a number of key gun issues,” said Dudley Brown, RMGO PAC Director. “Justin has changed his position on the entry of concealed carry permit holders into the statewide CBI database and has promised to purge existing permit holders from that system upon taking office.”

“RMGO members and gun activists in Larimer County should pat themselves on the back for convincing Justin Smith on these key issues, especially the database concern,” Brown said. “This is a huge victory for right-to-carry advocates, and those concerned with freedom in general.”

“With that in mind, Justin re-answered our candidate survey, and earned gun owners’ support. With this endorsement, Justin Smith is certain to be the next sheriff in Larimer County.”

You can read Justin Smith’s survey here.

Democrat candidate Jay Harrison and Independent candidate Del Bean have both failed to answer the survey.

Saturday’s Larimer County Republican Assembly was a tremendous day for the campaign. Not only did we come out on the top line of the ballot, but the margin of victory was almost 2:1.

We want to thank Assistant District Attorney Cliff Riedel for his excellent nomination speech. Cliff really drove home the importance of experience in a Sheriff and the necessity for well developed relationship between law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. The only thing that could top that nomination was the room raising seconding that we heard from our accomplished Sheriff, Jim Alderden. The room was certainly moved by his words on what it meant to hand the agency to a successor who he believed would take care of it and carry on the traditions of skilled, professional law enforcement.

We look forward to continued healthy debate on the issues going through to the primary.

To the Citizens of Larimer County,

Please join me in supporting Justin Smith for Larimer County Sheriff in 2010. As a recently retired captain with Fort Collins Police Services, I have had the honor and privilege to know Major Smith for 18 years and have worked closely with him for the last six. In my opinion Major Smith is the right man for the job of Sheriff for many reasons, but there are a few you should be aware of;

Major Smith has served as a law enforcement officer for 22 years and has 18 years experience with the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. He was promoted up through the ranks to Major and has been a member of the Department’s Executive Staff for the last ten years. During that time he has played an integral part in the leadership and decision making processes of the LCSO. He is a certified peace officer in the State of Colorado and holds a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice. Major Smith is a graduate of the FBI academy and the County Sheriffs of Colorado, Command Staff Institute. He has attended many other training sessions and is a member of several professional organizations (see www.JustinSmithForSheriff.com for further details).

Most important to me as a voter and resident of Larimer County is that Major Smith has integrity, which he has demonstrated to me on many occasions over the last six years. He is also dedicated to preserving the safety of Larimer County residents and will continue to ensure that the LCSO provides excellent service to the community.

It is obvious to me that Justin Smith is more than qualified to take on the leadership of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office and has worked hard to prepare himself for this very important position. I hope you will take a few moments to study Justin’s exceptional qualifications and other pertinent information on his web site and realize, as I do, that he is more than ready to take on the responsibilities as the Sheriff of Larimer County!

Sincerely

Tom McLellan

Many delegates and other residents have asked about the importance of electing a Sheriff who has taken the time to meet the qualifications prior to asking the citizens to elect him to office. A supporter ran across the story of what Portland, OR faced when they did just that. I think this speaks to the outcome that Portland faced and their Sheriff had prior experience, but still couldn’t meet the bar.
